Gladstone Region Human Services Leadership Program Underway

Lasting change for children and families happens when leaders across services, organisations and institutions come together to learn, build relationships and align their efforts around a shared vision. In August, people from across the Gladstone Region's human services sector came together to commence the Gladstone Region Human Services Leadership Program, a unique leadership development opportunity co-designed by local practitioners to strengthen leadership capability across the region.

Developed by and for the Gladstone Region's human services sector, the program reflects a collective commitment to building the skills, connections and ways of working that support better outcomes for children, young people and families. Grounded in the realities of local practice, it responds to a shared understanding that improving community wellbeing requires more than individual capability. It requires people who can work across organisational boundaries, foster trust and contribute to a more connected service system.

Delivered in partnership with Collaboration for Impact, the program follows a leadership journey built around three interconnected levels of leadership: Self. Role. System.

Participants first explore leadership through the lens of self-awareness, reflection and understanding how their strengthens, values, behaviours and experiences influence the way they lead. The program then focuses on leadership within their role, strengthening their ability to lead teams, build trust and create environments where people can thrive. The final stage expands to system leadership, recognising that lasting change for children and families relies on collaboration across organisations, services and communities.

The program also reflects values that continue to shape the Gladstone Region's human services sector, including connection, trust, cooperation, courage and a shared commitment to community wellbeing.

As Strong Communities CEO Crystal Robson reflects, "We absolutely cannot do this alone."

In increasingly complex environments, no single organisation can address community challenges in isolation. Creating better outcomes for children and families requires leaders who can build relationships, navigate complexity and work collectively towards shared goals.

Through the program, participants are creating space to learn alongside peers, reflect on their practice and strengthen the connections that support collaboration across the sector. These relationships are helping create the conditions for more coordinated responses to community priorities and challenges.

As participants progress through the program until November, they will continue exploring not only how they lead within their own organisations, but also how they can influence the broader conditions that help children, families and communities thrive.

By investing in people today, the Gladstone Region is building the capability needed to respond to challenges, seize opportunities and create lasting impact together.

The program runs from August to November 2026 and forms part of the Sector Capacity Building Initiative, supported through a community partnership with Rio Tinto Here for Gladstone.

Through investment in the people who lead services across the region, the initiative continues to strengthen the collective capacity of the human services sector and contribute to a future where all children, young people and families have the opportunity to thrive.
